This past Saturday at the Plymouth Speedway the weather was chilly but the racing action heated up the grandstands. The action was fast and competitive among the five divisions on hand.
The night started with qualifying. Tyler Roarhig set the pace in the late model division with a time of 13.285 seconds. Derrick Griffin broke the track record in qualifying for the sportsman as he was the first competitor to take a sportsman around the 3/8 mile in the thirteen second bracket. His time was 13.945. Darrin Harrell set fast time for the mini stocks with a time 15.069. The street stocks watched Vic Humes set the pace for their division with a time of 15.507 seconds.
The racing action started with a six car six lap dash for the late models as part of the Triple Crown. Picking up the dash win was Jack Landis of Edgerton, Ohio.
The sportsman were the first division out for their eight lap heat races. Picking up wins included Lou Stremme of South Bend and John Streeting Junior of Laporte.
The mini stocks were next with two eight lap heat races. Ben McCallum grabbed the fast heat and Derrick Davis took the second heat event.
The late models ran two eight lap heats. The winner of the fast heat was Cory Presslor of Benton Harbor, Michigan. Mike Garney had a great heat event in the second race for the class and went to victory lane.
The street stocks ran two eight lap heats. Stephanie Scott won the first and fast heat for the division. Mark McLawhorn of Chicago won the second heat race for his first ever victory.
The front wheel drive class were the final division to hit the track for their eight lap heat. Kelton Kaechle sliced and diced through the field to take top honors.
After a short intermission it was time for the feature racing action. The sportsman kicked off the features. Their event was thirty laps in distance. Lou Stremme charged to the front of the field early and never looked back. Rodney Spencer was able to catch Stremme but never had room to make a move for position. Spencer settle for second as Derrick Griffin held on for a third place finish.
The mini stocks ran a twenty-five lap feature event. Darrin Harrell and Matt Norem were racing hard out front with Justin Cogswell when the competitors got into lap traffic. Cogswell and Harrell were not as fortunate picking the right lane as Norem and lost the event late on the final lap. Harrell settled for second and Cogswell finished third.
The third and final leg for the Triple Crown of 2009 for the late models was the next race that rolled out from the pit area. Shawn Amor drove to an early lead in the event and led the most of the entirety. Late in the race with twenty laps left Jack Landis pulled along side Amor. They battle back and forth for the next fifteen laps until with about five to go Landis completed the pass on Amor to take the victory. Amor held on for second while Tyler Roarhig drove hard through the field to finish third.
The next race was the street stock twenty lap feature. Cory Lindsey turned his season around with a big win after a string of hard luck. He was followed in second by Cindy Stremme and Randy Presslor finished the race in third.
The final event of the night was the front wheel drive twenty lap feature. Kelton Kaechle towed Eric Kiser through the field in the first five laps. They battled till race end, but Kaechle held off Kiser for the win. Kiser finished in front of third place finishing Jason Moorehead.
This weekend will be a big double event for the 2009 Blueberry Festival and Labor Day weekend. Saturday night the races heat up with all five classes in action as they close in with just two weeks of point racing left. They include the late models, sportsman, street stocks, mini stocks, and front wheel drives.
Then on Sunday night for the first time ever the track will host Figure Eight Bus Races. Along with trailer races, spectator races, a demolition derby, roll over contest, and the return of the 600 legend car series. The action begins at 6:30. Camping is available for the weekend.
